Nobody researches this out of curiosity. You are looking at a channel because you want to model what it does: the format, the topics, the thumbnails, the upload rhythm. If those numbers were purchased, you are about to spend three months copying a format that has never actually convinced a human being to watch anything.
The cost is real. Choosing a niche and a format off a fake winner means the videos you produce will underperform without any obvious reason, because the reference itself never performed. You will blame your voice, your thumbnails or your pacing while the actual problem is that the model was hollow from the start.
The good news is that bought traffic leaves fingerprints in data anyone can see. You do not need the channel's analytics. Views, likes, comment count, comment content, upload dates and the shape of the catalog are enough for a verdict in about ten minutes.

Signals 1 and 2: the engagement ratio and the subscriber ratio
Signal one is the like rate. On a healthy long form video, likes sit between 2% and 5% of views, and comments between 0.1% and 0.5%. A video with 400,000 views should be carrying roughly 8,000 to 20,000 likes and 400 to 2,000 comments. When you find 400,000 views with 900 likes, that is 0.22%, roughly a tenth of the floor, and 60 comments is 0.015%. Traffic that does not press anything is traffic that was never watching.
Signal two is the subscriber ratio. A channel with 1,200 subscribers holding a video at 500,000 views is not impossible, viral happens, but viral leaves a trail: the subscriber count jumps, the next two or three videos get a lift, and the comments fill with people saying the algorithm sent them. If the catalog around that video sits at 800 views per upload and the subscriber count never moved, the spike did not come from viewers.
Both ratios have to be read against the format. Shorts run much lower, typically 1% to 3% likes and 0.02% to 0.1% comments. Sleep and relaxing music channels are naturally quiet, often 0.5% to 1.5% likes, because people fall asleep instead of engaging. Compare a channel against its own format, never against a universal number.

Signals 3 and 4: the shape of the curve and the flat catalog with one spike
Signal three is the accumulation shape. Purchased traffic arrives in a block, usually inside 24 to 72 hours, and then stops dead. Organic traffic has a tail: a video that reached 400,000 views honestly is still collecting hundreds a day weeks later, because suggested and search keep feeding it. You can see this without analytics by checking a video weekly for a month, or by comparing the view counts of videos published a week apart, where the older one should be visibly ahead if the growth is real.
Signal four is the catalog. Real growth is uneven but correlated. When a video breaks out, the algorithm pushes the channel's other work to the same audience, so the two or three uploads after the hit sit well above the channel's baseline. A single mountain surrounded by a flat plain, repeated across the catalog with no lift on either side, is the clearest structural sign that the mountain was bought.
The version of this that fools people is the channel with three or four spikes at regular intervals, all with the same magnitude. Organic breakouts are messy and vary wildly in size. A channel where every hit lands at almost exactly 300,000 views is describing a purchase order, not an audience.

Signals 5 and 6: the comments and the quality mismatch
Signal five is what the comments say. Read fifteen of them. Real comments reference something specific: a moment, a minute mark, a disagreement, a question about something said at minute 7. Purchased engagement produces three word compliments, emoji only replies, comments in a language that does not match the video's audience, and a cluster of them all posted within the same short window right after upload.
Signal six is the mismatch between production quality and audience size. A video with 900,000 views usually got there because something about it worked: the thumbnail, the hook, the topic timing. When you find a huge number attached to a thumbnail nobody would click, a title with no promise, no chapters, and a comment section with six entries, the number and the artifact do not belong to the same reality.
Any one signal alone can be a fluke. Three or more together on the same video is a verdict. Check the channel's three biggest videos and one ordinary one, and the pattern either holds or it does not.

What is not a signal: the four false positives
Old videos. A video from 2019 with 2 million views and 300 comments is not suspicious, comment sections thin out relative to views over the years and the like button had different habits around it. Judge the ratio using the video's own era.
Legitimate paid promotion. A channel can run YouTube ads to its own video, entirely within the rules. That produces a view block with low engagement that looks superficially similar. The difference is that legitimate promotion is usually pointed at a video that also performs organically, and the channel's baseline is healthy.
Quiet niches. Sleep, meditation, ambient music, study background and long form relaxation all have naturally low engagement, because the viewer is not present in the way an engagement metric assumes. Do not call a sleep channel fraudulent for a 0.8% like rate.
Embedded and external traffic. A video that got picked up by a news site or a large newsletter can accumulate a big block of views fast, from people who never touch the YouTube interface. The tell is that this traffic also has a tail and usually a spike in the comment section from a specific community.

A channel that survives all six signals is worth studying, and studying means taking the structure, not the content. What you copy is the shape: how long the videos are, where the hook lands, how many scenes per minute, what the thumbnail promises, how the topics are chosen, how often it publishes. What you never copy is the specific title, the specific script or the specific promise, which is how you end up with a channel that looks like a cheap imitation of one that already owns the term.
